ed fackler what can i say. i am a man who enjoys broadway but honestly would never have come to see this show until i found out it centered on a bi-polar wife/mother.This is a must see for all the men who have "stayed" as i too have lost my family to this "disease" I Too have sat in the darkness and witnessed a less than close relation between my daughters and their mother.I hope both of them take my advice and get tickets soon.Well done!

Valerie Never has a show moved me in the way Next to Normal did. Being a mother of two teenagers, I laughed and cried. The outstanding acting of Marin Mazzie drew me in and on all sorts of levels~I completely understood her, related to her, and got angry at her. The entire cast made this play completely believable. This show is not to be missed. I want to go again to see it!

lydia scotti I paid $41,sat in the last row(center) and did NOT get less than if I had sat in the front orchestra seat!!! The music was edgy and powerful. The lyrics potent. The actors were perfectly casted. The performance I experienced had an understudy in the role of Gabe. Understudy!! I cannot imagine anyone else doing such justice to the role!! Brian Crum was intimidating,sensual,insinuating and poignant. His stage presence electric and the chemistry that he shared with the rest of the cast was pure. I am,basically a film fan,but this show was so magically "right" that I have been telling my friends that they NEED to see this show!!! Further,I am involved with community theater(on and off stage) and I can appreciate the set design that was used-minimal,yet complete! Thank you for a memorable moment in my life.

Keaton Grant I want and saw tthis play Twice. Original Broadway cast and The New family. and i was AMAZED when i saw both. I was very impressed by Kyle Dean Massey adaptation of Gabes songs the second time. Marin Mazzie and Jason Daniely were both Phenomonal. I plan on seeing it again and again. Ian Smith I recently went to New York from Australia and wanted to see at least one Broadway show. I did my research and this one sounded interesting. Wow, I picked right. I have seen dozens of shows and this was one of the best. Great score and fantastic cast. No wonder it won a Pulitzer Prize .Justifiably received a standing ovation on the night I went. Brilliant!

Nick I loved that it mixed the seriousness of a drama with music and how complex the characters were. I also enjoyed how unique the music was compared to many other musicals on broadway. Shawn Elmore I was very upset when I saw that Alice Ripley would not be performing on the evening of June 7, 2010. However, I have to give mad props to Jessica Phillips, her understudy, for her performance. I thought she carried the show very well, and there was not taking away from the brilliance of this amazingly moving book, music, lyrics, and orchestrations. This show is a must-see for EVERYONE.

Alice Ripley was NOT going to be performing.. I almost cried.. I bit my lip and hoped I would not be disappointed by her understudy--Jessica Phillips. Within five minutes my fears were gone... Jessica Phillips ROCKED the stage! nothing disappointing about this performance... I love Alice... but Jessica was just as awesome... looking forward to seeing N2N on tour in Philly in 2011! Craig This amazing show is a definite must-see! When a show can take an entire audience collectively on an emotional roller coaster ride, you know you have experienced something magical. The performances by this unbelievable cast cannot be summed up in mere words - the night I saw the production, Alice Ripley was off and we were offered a moving performance by her stand by, Jessica Phillips which was cheered at curtain call. Kudos to everyone involved in this special show - I hope it has a long run!

Jonathan I have seen Next to Normal twice, so I will just state my thoughts on the show overall. The music is incredible, the book is very strong. The set is very small, but I really like that it is on 3-stories, and very interactive. The costume design is very simple, but I think it works, for the show. The only difference in the cast from the two performances was in the role of Gabe. The first time I saw the show, he was played by Aaron Tveit, but the second time, with Kyle Dean Massey. I enjoyed both performances very much, but Kyle really stood out, IMO. Overall, I love the show, definitely one of my favorites. If I lived closer, I would definitely see it more often!

Mallory Of all the shows i have seen this has to be the most moving and incredible. Not only is the set and book outstanding but the vocal and acting talent blows through the roof. Jack This show was incredible. I saw it on Saturday, March 6th. The cast that I saw consisted of Alice Ripley, J. Robert Spencer, Kyle Dean Massey, Meghann Fahy, Adam Chandler-Berat, and Louis Hobson. All cast members were very talented and passionate about their roles in the show. Very moving and emotional show with a hard-rocking and modern score. Not for all people, though. Some people may have a tough time with the intense emotions and scenes that are in this show.

Jazzy I saw this show over the summer, and from the first scene, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. As soon as it ended, I decided I would see it again. I begged and begged my mom to see if before Aaron Tveit left, and I saw it. The second time was even more amazing. Both Kyle Dean Massey and Aaron Tveit were amazing at the role. If you get a chance to see it, then take it! I would see it every day and not get bored of it. I listen to the soundtrack every day because the music is just that amazing. See it ASAP.

David I went to see the show for the third time with friends on 2.3.10. I was disappointed that the roles of Diana and Natalie were played by the understudies. However, Meghann Fahy was brilliant and as good as her counterpart. Jessica Phillips sang beautifully, but did not carry the show like Alice Ripley. It was a different experience and lost most of the emotional appeal.

Cliff Sharpless I have to admit when I read that Alice Ripley would not be performing the role the night I chose to see this remarkable show I was so upset. It only took 5 minutes into the show for that notion to be swept away as I was swept away on a 2 hour journey that was nothing short of breathtaking. From the first song, you can see a facade falling apart, and through the show you see the utter destruction and then light slowly piecing things back together. Beth I was not sure what to expect even though I had heard a bit about the show before hand. While it was a very heavy topic it was not really depressing. I think that had to do with the rock musical aspect and some of the comedic parts of the show. I truly found it engaging and meaningful. The staging was wonderful. The cast was fantastic, with rich, full voices and extremely relate-able characters. I enjoyed a show that in any other genre would have been very heavy handed and made me feel depressed.

Hannah On coming to new York for a five day holiday with my parents and brother, the most important decision to me was what to see on Broadway. The four of us have very different tastes, so it took a lot to persuade them to pay for us to see the show. However, when we left, they were just as drained and energised as I was. The show reached out to all of us in very different ways, but we were left with thoughts that refused to go away for quite some time. It touched me in a way i had not previously thought possible, and gave me such a huge new appreciation for my own family. Kelly Marie McKenna Next To Normal touches a part of me that was hidden and separate for so much of my life that I am sometimes surprised it is still there. I see a little piece of myself in nearly every character. I see a story that is brave in its telling, taxing for the audience and tenacious in its goal of education and emotional growth for all involved. I am in love with the mess that is left for us at the end. It simply would have been outrageous to lay down a squeaky clean resolution, easier perhaps, though we would have been cheated. The things that are easy rarely carry much worth. I left the theatre on a Monday night secure in the knowledge that I had grown in spirit and soul. There is a piece of my being that now resides in the Booth, deeply invested into the heart of Next To Normal.

Connie I have never been so gripped and mesmerized by a performance as when we saw Next to Normal this past weekend. My youngest daughter is studying Drama in NYC so we go to the theater often. This is the one show she wanted to see for her birthday. Well we were all moved to tears....not once or twice but multiple times. Sad tears and happy tears. Alice Ripley was AMAZING! It was incredible to see how moved the audience was, and more so to see how moved and inspired my daughter was. No one can ever question her 2009 Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical! David Baxter I had only read a few word of mouth recommendations for Next to Normal but the show was the undoubted highlight of our recent trip to New York from England. The story of the Goodman family is beautifully told but the decision to make it a musical is genius. The songs allow the characters to reveal their innermost thoughts and feelings to the audience. A remarkable cast show utter conviction and althogh a standing ovation is regarded as "unBritish" I was on my feet to salute this extraordinary show. Normal it is not in any sense and I hope that London producers will be brave enough to bring this show to the West End as it will live in my memory for a very long time.

Never have I watched a musical that created such a heavy heart that the whole of the audience broke out into tears, laughter, and emotions. Ron Everyone around me was in tears! It was a very moving show. As a nurse that has worked in the Psych field I have to say, the show really portrayed what some people with bipolar feel everyday. The story was intense, and gave both the view of the patient and the family that supports them daily. As for the music, I think the show would have been done better as a play. Ayana Ayscue First to say this play was so sad it actually made me cry during a few scenes and the acting from each character was absolutely ah -ma- zing!!!! The music was melodys to remember and am I the only one who thinks that the projection was to die for or what!!!! The siging was like angels on stage . My favorite song was actually catch me im falling and I loved that at the ending the drum was for the heart beat, kudos!!!! I saw this musical on the seventh night and I was so happy I got 5th row seats.!!!! Good wishes to the cast and I love you guys so much.!!!!!! from a 13 year old in Montclair, NJ .

I have never seen an entire cast as together as these brilliant actors are. The score is something unparalleled by any other show I have seen. Alyssa I walked into the theatre expecting a good musical with drama elements. I walked out with a lump in my throat, tears in my eyes, and a wide smile on my face. What I was shown was some of the best performances I have had the pleasure of seeing, with amazing acting that breaks the barriers of reality and show, allowing one to empathize with the characters as if one were truly living this experience. With great music to accompany it, I cannot see anything that could hold this powerful musical back from blowing every person who sees it away.

Elizabeth I can define myself as a "theatre junkie" to the full extremes of the phrase, and this is the first show I can recall that made me break down in tears. Not only does it pull on heartstrings, it yanks them to the breaking point. I have never felt more connected, energized, and completely emotionally wrapped up with the characters on-stage. Perfectly flawed flawless performances and a score to match. Forget the feel-good musicals. Next to Normal has raised the bar and forces everyone to feel it ALL.

Cory This musical, if one can call it that, is no what you would expect from Broadway. It shows a real family, with all of the problems and mess ups. It is sort of reminiscent of RENT, in its usage of real people and problems. But Next to Normal strikes closer to home,it shows the family next door, or even the family in your own home. But, to someone who has gotten used to all of the more frivolous and happy-go-lucky musicals of the past decade, this truly i the farthest thing from normal, and it is by far the best musical on the Great White Way at this time.

Pat N2N is an amazing show. It takes you on a roller coaster ride. The cast and the musicians are excellent. I was moved to tears several times as there is such depth. I have seen it three times since it opened on bway. I bring a different family member each time. N2N is the best play! You do not only watch the play, you experience it. Jacqueline This is a not to be missed show. From the beginning of the show until the end it has you on the edge of your seat. Never have I seen an audience in unison stand to pay tribute for this phenomenal performance. The cast is outstanding with great honesty, sensitivity and heartfelt emotion. This show will not only change your view of mental illness but forces you to examine your own life. Congratulations to the entire production for taking on this very difficult subject with clarity, kindess, humour (at times) and compelling music and lyrics. This is a not be be missed show. It should win to the Tony for Best Musical and the female lead and the husband and son (both in my opinion leads) should all have been nominated (two of the three were) for their performances. As one who has the honor and good fortune of going to Broadway shows several times a month, this sets a new standard. If you have one show to see this year, see Next to Normal, you will not be disappointed. Just remember, you will feel as if you ran a marathon when it is over.

Stephanie I have seen quite a few musicals over the years, but nothing compares to this one. It takes a hauntingly heartbreaking story and portrays beautifully every emotion on the spectrum. Like bipolar disorder itself, you experience highs, lows, and everything in between. The music was stellar, the cast is top notch, and the story is absolutely phenomenal. If you never go to the theater again, go see this show.

Jim Little reserach and simply the knowledge that I would be four rows from Alice Ripley was enough to sell me a ticket to Next to Normal. Never, in my years of acting and theatregoing had I been so moved from start to finish. I have no history or back story with bereavement, bipolarity, depression, or dysfunctionality as is depicted here, however, the direction, music, lyics, and performances of each cast member individually -- and of all entities collectively -- moved me so much. I wept (sometimes uncontrollably) for Diana, her familiy, their plight and the many metaphors this story represents. Broadway may be experiencing a financial depression these days, and Next to Normal may not be the show a Lion King audience member would look for. Nonetheless, everyone needs to see this show. The perfection of its components is reason enough. I saw the show less than a week ago and wish I lived in New York again, just to experience this brilliant work one more time... to become its groupie. Next to Normal is a canvas from which everyone can glean human sensitivity. Now I know what the English felt when they first saw Hamlet.

Ed Helstosky Every now and then comes a show that injects new life to the Broadway stage.Next to Normal is that show, an emotional rollercoaster through life's ups and downs. Winston I came all the way from England for a holiday in New York and wanted to see something unique to Broadway, so I saw Next To Normal on 17 April. The plot was just fantastic, and the music has actually grown on me since I came back and bought the soundtrack! Both Alice Ripley and Aaron Tveit deserve special mentions, but the whole cast were fantastic. I saw Spring Awakening the week before I saw Next To Normal in London but believe it or not, I prefer Next To Normal right now! A wonderful introduction to American theatre. (notice the spelling of theatre!)

When I heard the show was being transferred to Broadway, I ran out to get my tickets. After seeing the show last night I can honestly say, this show has come a long way and is truly being presented in its perfect form. The polished production and the superb direction shine through. The ever so talented ensemble cast, masterfully slip into the minds and lives of the characters and excite the audience with a roller coaster ride of emotions throughout the show. The chemistry between Ripley, Tveit and Spencer is fluid, dynamic and captivating making it so easy to fall in love with each of the characters. This show is 100% Tony award material. Please, don't miss out on this unique and extraordinary Broadway show. Most original show of the season by a mile!

Richard I saw the show on Sunday afternoon April 19th with my wife and daughter and we abslutely loved the show, as did the entire audience. We rose as one for an immediate standing ovation when the show ended. The six member cast is incredibly talented, the staging is totally unique and perfect for the show and the venue. The music and the lyrics, which really tell the story (there is not a lot of straight dialogue) are poignant and perfectly fit the show. There is laughter and sadness in discussing a difficult subject matter. I commend all involved in the show, it is sure to be a great success. Whatever was done in Washington DC to improve on the original surely worked. Congratulations !!!!

Alice Ripley (Diana) gives the performance of her career as a mother struggling with mental illness. Peter Mcclung Saw the show Monday Night ( April 13) at The Booth. First of all congrats on awards won at The Helen Hayes Awards last night in DC. Well Deserved!! My wife and I loved the production. The perfromances were top-notch. There should be many Tony Nominations and a few winners also. We especially loved Jennifer's performance, she should walk away with the Tony for Best Supporting Actress in a musical along with Aaron for male performance. I was just thrilled to see a "New Original" piece which Broadway has been crying out for. The music was just beautiful and the subject matter was something we can all connect to in some way. Will be a horse race between this show and Billy Elliott; two wonderful shows, but different. One big, one small. Much like the year of Wicked and Ave. Q, but who won the Tony....ah yes! Congrats to all on a terrific show. We will be back soon to see it. Probably after they hang the purple banner in June that says " Tony Winner Best Musical 2009"

VI I had the extreme pleasure of seeing the show April 9th in the Booth Theatre. I absolutely loved the performances and the music. Although the show does get a little slow at times, its plot twists and turns wrench the audience in every way. You will be laughing, crying, and staring in disbelief. The only things that I would like to see improved are: there is no song list in the playbill and there are many times you can not see the action at the front of the stage. A dynamite hit! Aaron Tveit is a matinee idol we will be hearing from for years to come. GO SEE THIS SHOW!

Alexander Fernandez Saw the show at Arena Stage in D.C. Will be going to New York to see it again. I do not believe I have been moved so strongly by a show - start to finish - in a long long time. The lyrics are explosive, poetic, subtle and brutal. The emotion is raw, but humane. The cast is flawless - led by Ripley who must be spent at the end of the show, after what must be a gut wrenching performance. This show demonstrates how our own flaws can tear us apart; how our own minds can undermine us at every step -- how trying to do our best, is sometimes not enough; and, how we persevere, nonetheless. You must see this, because it must be seen.

Dan Shapiro Some days when I wade through New York City traffic or try to keep my cool when dealing with a mindless bureaucrat, the only thing that makes me stay is the arts and theatre in NYC. As a member of the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) I go to a lot of theatre, some good some bad and some very special. Last night I went to Next to Normal. The theme of this musical was a surprise to me after reading a brief review which stated "Next to Normal is a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crises." The reviewer could have been talking about unemployment, or crab grass, not mental illness. Next to Normal has thirty original songs and the last two are good enough, if re-orchestrated to stand alone, but there is not a single title of a song in the Playbill!!! This staging is a wonderful night of theatre, especially the first rate acting of the mother and the powerful singing of the mother and daughter. The songs were mostly to the point and poignant. The exception was a hilarious Mary Poppins-like "Valium and Prozac are among my favorite things." Most musicals are banal, but Next to Normal, puts you in the family and you understand the emotional and practical problems of mental illness. Next to Normal, also explores the hit and miss state of modern psychiatric medicine. Despite a poor playbill, Next to Normal is not problem, but great theatre and another reason to see theatre in New York City.

I was totally surprised at some points and this show does change how you view things in a way. How every family is different and not everything is perfect. Stagedoor was amazing too. Steve Gore I was not prepared for the Arena Stage presentation of N2N. I expected a rock musical-musical comedy about a "dysfunctional family." What I got was a compelling, brutal, honest portrayal of a family in crisis, discovering that love requires one to understand metaphors, face ghosts, and sometimes let go. The musical haunts me three months later. The performance are electrifying and true. I am so glad that the production lives on for more audiences. I do think parents should be made aware that this material is extremely intense, and potentially difficult for young adolescents.
